Lincoln-Douglas Debate
Description
In this event, students debate individually for or against a resolution of value. Because students are asked to weigh values, this debate emphasizes logic, theory, and philosophy as the underpinnings for each contention, example, and warrant. Lincoln-Douglas Debate topics range from individual freedom versus the collective good to economic development versus environmental protection. Students prepare affirmative and negative cases and then engage in an exchange of cross-examinations and rebuttals in an attempt to convince a judge that s/he is the better debater in the round. Speakers are encouraged to adopt a direct, communicative delivery while debating. An entire debate is roughly 45 minutes.
